Recent sightings - John Dillinger photos

Some 50 photos of Hoosier Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger are among the works on display this month at the Art Bank Studio and Gallery, 811 Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis. Organized by Dillinger great nephew Jeff Scalf, the collection includes some familiar shots, but many are rare and some have apparently never been shown before. There are the expected (and some unexpected) photos of the notorious Dillinger in the custody of -- and sometimes clowning with -- sheriff's deputies and the like. But the family pictures are the highlight, and say a lot more about the man.

The collection is mounted unpretentiously, like snapshots in a family album, and that works. And they're hung in the back, next to the old vault of this former bank building. What could be more appropriate?
